Call it crazy. Call it insane. Call it a huge deterrent. Call it inhumane. Or just call it Florida’s reality. That’s right Florida, it’s happening. Florida Governor Ron Desantis recently signed House Bill 903. House bill 903 among other things allows Florida to carry out executions via a firing squad. Shots fired. No seriously beginning July 1st shots can be fired to carry out Court ordered death sentences.
There are supposedly reasons for why we need to add death by firing squad to the execution menu. One claimed reason is a shortage of the chemicals needed to make the lethal drugs used in Florida executions. To read about that issue and more click here.
The most recent firing squad execution was Brad Sygmon in South Carolina back in May of 2025. South Carolina was one of a handful of States that offered death by firing squad as means to a lawful execution. Before Sygmon’s death in South Carolina the only other State to execute an inmate via a firing squad was Utah.
As always, we at the Law Office of Matthew Glassman P.A., strive to keep you updated with all the criminal related law changes. This one caught us a bit off guard, but it appears Florida isn’t the only State resorting to firing squads to carry out death sentences. Idaho has taken the firing squad a step further making it their primary method going forward.
